Weena Gera

Weena Gera is OeAD’s Ernst Mach Grants- ASEA-UNINET Research Fellow at InFER, the Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy at BOKU. She is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines Cebu. She specializes in the evolving structures of governance in fragile states, particularly within Asia and the Pacific. Her recent research projects and publications focus on governance for sustainable development and urban resilience. These include analysis on the legal aspects of sustainable development; public participation in environmental governance; the politics of representation and decentralization; coherence and integration of mining laws toward ecosystem services promotion in ASEAN; and cross-border dimensions of metropolitan disaster risk reduction and management (comparative analysis within Southeast Asia). At InFER, she is working on regulatory reconfigurations in Philippine mining governance and implications for industry sustainability. Weena holds a Masters of Industrial Relations (2003) from the University of the Philippines Diliman, MA (2006) and PhD (2009) in International Development from Nagoya University, and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, Tokyo (2012-2014).
