Rückblick

  • Cooperation in the forestry section of the Spatial Research and Planning Report of the Austrian Government (Eckmüllner, Glück, u.a./1970). Support of research into forest spatial planning on the basis of political science and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Econometric analyses and short-term forecasts of various Austrian timber markets (sawlogs, pulpwood, sawnwood, particle board and fibre board) (Glück/1972). Support of marketing in the course “Forstliche Handels- und Marktlehre”. Both econometric models and marketing of forest products were not novel in wood market research at this time.
  • Solution of the decision problem to convert trees and saw logs into assortments in such a way that the revenue is maximized by means of Operations Research (Glück/1974). It is the basis of computer-based management information systems and electronic control systems of modern sawmills in Europe.
  • Support of paradigm change in forest policy research from an ontological-normative to an empirical-analytical approach (Glück/1977). In the course of time, this scientific programme based on political science has become the mainstream in forest policy research worldwide.
  • Enlightenment in addition to description and explanation of forest political phenomena. It was found that forest thinking in Central Europe is much rooted in persisting ideological beliefs supporting the primacy of timber production ()Glück/1982).
  • Contribution to the solution of forest policy issues by means of the outcome of research as ultimate goal of applied sciences such as forest political science. Seminars and conferences often offer favourable opportunities for the science- policy dialogue (Glück/1995).
  • After the Rio Summit 1992 focus of forest policy research on international forest policy issues (Glück/1994). By this time the impact of international agreements and negotiations dealing with forests on national forest policy was underestimated by forest practice.
  • Analysis of governance change in forest policy (Glück, Rayner, Cashore/2005). Traditional forest governance has been enriched by new modes of governance resulting in a hybrid pattern of old and new actors working side by side in new relationships, rather than one supplanting the other.
  • Lead of numerous international research projects with the ambition of trans-disciplinary research to bridge the divide between science and policy (Glück, Avdibegovic, u.a./2010).
